A Message from the General Manager

April - June , 2008

Tennessee Book Company has been working very closely with the State Department of Education in preparation of the new Cycle IV Section, Social Studies. Below are various pieces of information that could answer some of your immediate questions regarding Social Studies and other textbook purchasing processes.

A.   Sample Materials

The coordination of the sample retrieval process is well underway. Each individual board should have received a letter from Tennessee Book Company explaining the process including the timeline of events.

If you have any questions or concerns about the process, please do not hesitate to give us a call.

B.   Official List of Textbooks (New Social Studies Titles) – Textbook Catalog

The Official List of Textbooks (Textbook Catalog) will be available on-line through the Tennessee Book Company website on Wednesday, April 2. The printed version of the catalog will be mailed the last week of April. All of the new Social Studies titles will be available through On-Ramp beginning on Tuesday, April 1.

C.   Purchasing Social Studies Materials Early

We will be placing orders with the publishing companies as early as mid-April for the newly adopted Social Studies materials with anticipation of receiving the materials in late May or early June. Based on initial reports from the publishers, their stock levels and print dates are in sync with our purchasing plans.

We encourage each of you to place your orders as soon as possible with Tennessee Book Company. Even if delivery is not wanted until late July or August, it is better for all involved to get the orders on our system for visibility and planning purposes.

D.   Adoption Recording

As always, it is imperative that each board record their adoptions with the State Department of Tennessee using the forms on our website as soon as possible. Both Tennessee Book Company and the publishers themselves translate these recordings into stock forecasts, which are then turned into textbook printing quantities. If recordings are not filed, forecasts for printing of materials may be understated which in turn could create backorders.

E.   End of Year Spending

As your fiscal year nears the end, you may find the need to spend additional monies on textbooks. Alerting Tennessee Book Company as to the titles involved as soon as possible will help ensure availability. To ensure all deadlines are met, we would appreciate receiving your orders requiring billing prior to June 30, to be placed no later than Tuesday, June 24.

F.   Backlist Purchasing

Backlist (any title not on the current Cycle IV Social Studies adoption list) purchasing will always be unpredictable. Each individual systems’ needs are different but if there is any information that can be shared with us regarding future needs; even if they are not certain, give us a call so we can review our stock levels in an effort to eliminate backorders. Again, we are looking to gather information on any item that you may purchase so we can review stock levels to eliminate backorders.

It has come to my attention that the state may be requiring a Personal Finance course and some additional credit hours in Math and Science. If you are aware of an increased need for textbooks in these areas, please share those estimated quantities with Louise Walker. We again will review our stock levels and make sure we have plenty of materials to meet your additional needs.
